So, without further ado, let us dive right in and get started!

What Can Cause Your Mower Pull Cord to Break?

There are several reasons that your lawn mower pull cord could not be working. For one, there could be an element which is broken, jammed assembly, rusted parts, damaged parts or you may need to simply lubricate the mechanism.

It really could be a very easy fix or you may need parts in order to fix the pull cord. So before you can even start your repairs you need to take the housing off so that you can assess what exactly is wrong with your lawn mower cord.

How Can You Fix A Lawn Mower Pull Cord?

Now that we know a bit more about how a mower pull cord could break it is essential that we talk about what you can do to fix it.

That is what we are going to cover in this section. So, without further ado, let us dive right in and get started!

Step 1 – Take Off The Housing Cap Of The Recoil

The housing cap is essentially the cap which has the recoil and pulley together. So what you need to do first is unscrew this cap so that you can get to everything you need.

If your string is out of place all you need to do is simply put it back where it was and you should have a working mower again.

However, if you see that the hosting, spring, or pulley has failed or has completely broken, you may have something more complicated on your hand.

If any of these issues are what have caused your mower pull cord to fail then you may need to order a replacement part before you can actually repair the device.

Step 2 – Make Sure That You Loosen The Rope

Before you can move onto any repairs you will need to ensure that the rope has been loosened. By doing this you will make it easier for you to take the rope out of the housing.

Step 3 – Replace Any Parts That Have Been Damaged

If any parts have been damaged or are not working as they should then you will need to order any parts you need. By doing this you should have your lawn mower working as it should.

The most common parts to break are as follows: Pulley, Spring, and Housing.

Step 4 – You May Need To Re-Tension The Spring

In order to re-tension the spring you may need to wind the pulley in the opposite direction. How exactly you do this may vary as it will depend on the rope and housing.

When you have the pulley in the housing you should then turn it about six times. Once you do that you should use a screwdriver to help you hold the pulley in place.

When you do this you will essentially prevent it from spinning while you make your adjustments to the tension.

Step 5 – Put The Cap In Place And Fix It To The Mower Properly

Your cap needs to be properly fixed in play as it is what holds your pulley in the right place. It is important to mention even a properly fixed cap will not stop your pulley from spinning.

Because of this issue it is essential that you make sure that this does not happen and is prevented at all costs.

Step 6 – Put The Cord Back In Its Place

Both the housing and pulley should have holes which you can use to line everything up. Lining everything up ensures that the tread can more easily pass through and thus make reinstalling the cord much easier.

You will need to make sure that the rope you are using is the right length as one that is too long or too short can both cause issues with your whole system.

What if you are worried about the cord becoming loose or or untying itself? Well, you could use glue which is placed over the knot.

However, you need to make sure that the knot does not interfere with anything. Especially the rotation of the pulley within the housing.

Step 7 – The Cord Should Be Properly Coiled

What you will need to do first is take the screwdriver out of the way while you are holding the recoil starter in its proper palace.

After that you will need to pull everything tight before you actually let go of the pulley.

While you are doing this you need to ensure that you are controlling the speed at which the pullet is using while it winds the cord back to the starter.

Final Thoughts

With these six super easy steps you should be able to quickly and easily fix your lawn mower if the pull cord is not working as it should.

Bear in mind that you may need to order some replacement parts if something is broken. But generally if the pulley or cord is simply misaligned, you should be able to easily fix the issue.

With all of that being said, we hope that you have a great day. Good luck fixing your lawn mower. It is much easier than you think. You can do it!

Goodbye for now!
