How To Restring A Troy Bilt Weedeater: A Step-By-Step Guide

Here is our simple step-by-step guide on how to restring a Troy Bilt weedeater. Follow these steps to restring your weedeater perfectly and have it up and running again in no time!

How To Restring A Troy Bilt Weedeater: Step 1

The first thing you need to do is ensure that the trimmer is turned off. Once you have established this, you need to find the inner spool and twist it in a counterclockwise direction.

This will make the spool’s arrows line up with the arrows of the outer spool.

Once you have done this, take the outer spool in your hand. There should be no tension, so you should take away the leftover line by pulling it. Then, cut some string. Make sure the string you cut is around 10 ft.

Once you have completed the step above, push the end of the string through the outer spool’s eyelet. It should come out of the side of the outer spool. Take it from here and thread it through the string loading hole on the inner spool.

From here, you should see the line near the bump button. Grab hold of it and push it through the locking hole of the weedeater.

It should form a ½ “ loop. Find the part of the string next to the eyelet and pull it until the string on the outer spool comes into contact with the inner spool.

Now, you need to cut another 10 ft string and follow the steps above. Only this time, you will use the outer spools’ second eyelet.

Both pieces of string need to be wound simultaneously, so it is best to attach them to the spool together. After you do this, you can go ahead and wind the spool.

Now, you need to wind the spool! First, hold the outer spool so it is still and turn the inner spool in an anticlockwise direction.

Stop winding the spool every so often and tug on both pieces of string until around 1-2” unwind. This works to stop the spool from jamming.

Do this until the entirety of the string is on the spool, with 4” left hanging. Now, you can lock the string in place by turning the spool in a clockwise direction.

How To Restring A Troy Bilt Weedeater: Pre-Wound Spool

Sometimes, you will find that the spool you have in the Troy Bilt weedeater is pre-wound. If this is the case, then there are different steps you need to take to restring the weedeater. Follow this guide for more!

How To Restring A Troy Bilt Weedeater: Step 1

As before, make sure the engine of the weedeater is switched off. Then, take the bump knob off the weedeater by turning it in an anticlockwise direction.

The spring and foam seal will fall out, too. Put them to one side to be used in a later step.

Now, you need to separate the inner spool and the outer spool. Make sure the arrow side of the inner, pre-wound spool is facing up and then place the string into the outer spool’s eyelets.

Once you do this, you can go ahead and place the pre-wound spool and outer spool together again.

Now, you can go ahead and put the spool back in the trimmer. To do this, you need to place the spring and foam seal back onto the bump knob.

Then, push the pump knob into the spool and turn it in a clockwise direction to ensure it locks.

Now, you should see the two strings sticking out. Pull them to release them from their slots in the pre-wound spool and voila! You have successfully restrung a Troy Bilt weedeater with a pre-wound spool.
